Photoshop vs Illustrator vs Canva: Which Tool for Which Job?

By EG Digital Skills Training · Updated

New designers often ask which tool to learn first. The answer starts with one idea: some tools work with pixels and others work with shapes.

Raster and vector in one minute

Raster images are made of pixels. They are great for photos but get blurry when enlarged. Vector graphics are made of shapes and paths, so they stay sharp at any size, which makes them ideal for logos.

Photoshop: photos and pixel work

Use Photoshop for photo editing, retouching, combining images and creating detailed social media graphics and posters.

Illustrator: logos and illustrations

Use Illustrator for logos, icons and illustrations that must stay crisp on a visiting card and on a large banner.

CorelDRAW: popular for print

CorelDRAW is another vector tool, widely used for print work such as visiting cards, brochures and flex banners.

Canva: fast, template-based design

Canva is easy to learn and quick for social posts, presentations and simple documents. Its brand kit helps teams keep colours and fonts consistent.

Which tool for which job

  • Logo or icon: Illustrator or CorelDRAW.
  • Photo edit or retouch: Photoshop.
  • Daily social media posts: Canva.
  • Print layout such as brochures and banners: CorelDRAW or Illustrator.
  • Complex poster with photos: Photoshop.

Advice for beginners

Learn design principles first: layout, colour, spacing and type. Then pick tools to match your goals. Many professionals use several tools in one project.
